Summer Eco Driving Tips
The summer driving season is quickly approaching and now is the time to evaluate how to think green driving habits. It is also good to keep in mind that the average mid-sized care produces roughly three times its weight in CO2 every year. and a great portion of this can be reduced during heavy summer driving period.
To "Green" your driving this summer, here are a few tips:
1. Consider car pooling for your summer activities. Trips to camps, amusement parks and sporting events are a great opportunity to share a ride.
2. Air conditioning causes reduced vehicle fuel efficiency at lower speeds. At speeds of
more than 45 MPH, air conditioning use is better for fuel economy than the drag caused by an open
window.
3. Turn your engine off instead of idling your engine. It is more efficient to turn the engine off when idling over 45 seconds or more. This even offsets the amount of fuel required to restart the engine.
4. Slow down. Fast driving burns fuel more quickly. Vehicles burn 20% more fuel as speeds surpass 60 MPH.
5. Proper tire inflation. Inflate your car tires to the highest pressure recommended by the
manufacturer (don't forget the spare) and make sure your wheels are properly aligned. Improper tire inflation can reduce fuel efficiency by 1 - 2 mpg.
6. Put it in cruise. Cruise control can improve fuel efficiency for most drivers by
allowing their vehicles to maintain a constant speed, which is more efficient.
7. Keep your vehicle properly serviced. Your vehicle in a well tuned state, will mean it is operating at its most efficient, which means it will use less fuel in operation.
